Minister for Health and Social Development, Vincent O. Wheatley, has underscored the importance of timely Social Security and National Health Insurance (NHI) contributions, describing them as essential to the sustainability of the Territory’s social protection system.
Speaking during the second sitting of the third session of the Fifth House of Assembly on Thursday, January 15, the Minister said Social Security remains a cornerstone of social protection in the Virgin Islands, providing critical benefits such as pensions, medical care, and income support for workers and their families.
Minister Wheatley emphasised that employers play an indispensable role in maintaining the system, noting that paying contributions is not only a legal requirement but also a moral responsibility. He said employers who remain current with their contributions strengthen their workforce, improve recruitment and retention, and maintain good standing with government agencies and business partners.
According to the Minister, timely contributions also enhance financial predictability for businesses and help ensure that payments are directed toward employee benefits rather than penalties. He added that a visible commitment to employee welfare builds trust, productivity, and community confidence.
Minister Wheatley highlighted the inclusiveness of the Virgin Islands’ social security framework, noting that self-employed individuals who register and make regular contributions are entitled to the full range of benefits, unlike in some jurisdictions where informal workers are excluded.
He warned that failure to make consistent contributions could leave families vulnerable during times of illness, accidents, or incapacity, stressing that the effectiveness of Social Security and NHI depends on regular and accurate payments.
Addressing employers who may be experiencing financial difficulties, the Minister encouraged early engagement with the Social Security Board and NHI, assuring businesses that both institutions are prepared to work with employers to establish practical payment plans. He also promoted the use of secure online payment portals to simplify and speed up compliance.
Minister Wheatley called on members of the House of Assembly to help champion the message of compliance and partnership, urging collective action to safeguard the welfare of workers and ensure the long-term resilience of the Territory’s social security systems.
He concluded by calling on all employers to pay contributions on time, engage proactively with Social Security and NHI, and help preserve the security and dignity of the people of the Virgin Islands for generations to come.
