Representatives from the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) and Rotary Clubs across the Territory are collaborating on a joint cardiovascular symposium aimed at raising awareness, promoting prevention, and improving community health outcomes.
Dr. June Samuels, Acting Chief Officer of the BVIHSA and President of the Rotary Club of Road Town, joined Dr. Sharlon Lewis, Wellness Chair for Rotary Tortola, on Talking Points this week to discuss the initiative and the growing urgency surrounding heart health in the Virgin Islands. The discussion focused on how partnerships between service organisations and public health institutions can help address increasing cases of cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Samuels noted that heart disease remains the leading cause of death in both the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands, warning that multiple chronic conditions often work together to worsen health outcomes. She also pointed to concerning trends showing a rise in cardiovascular issues among younger people.
Dr. Lewis added that several lifestyle and social factors are contributing to the increase, underscoring the need for greater public education and early intervention. The upcoming symposium scheduled Saturday February 7 at the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital lobby, for is expected to provide information on prevention, risk reduction and healthier living, while encouraging community members to take a more active role in managing their health.
Organisers say the event will highlight the importance of collaboration in tackling non-communicable diseases and provide residents with practical tools to improve their wellbeing.
