The Virgin Islands Alzheimer’s Association (VIAA), in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Public Service Learning Institute (VIPSLI), successfully hosted an informative webinar titled “What is Dementia? Understanding the Signs, Symptoms, and Impact of Dementia,” attracting over 300 public officers.
The educational session was designed to increase awareness and understanding of dementia by providing participants with valuable information on the different forms of dementia, early warning signs, risk factors, available support resources, and practical ways to support individuals and families affected by the condition.
The webinar was facilitated by Ms. Edna Williams, President and Founder of the Virgin Islands Alzheimer’s Association, as the Association continues its observance of Brain Health Awareness Month. Through engaging discussions and expert insights, participants gained a deeper understanding of the impact of dementia on individuals, families, workplaces, and communities.
Participants also explored practical ways workplaces can support employees living with dementia or caring for loved ones affected by the condition. Recommendations included fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment, offering flexible work arrangements where possible, encouraging open communication, providing access to employee assistance and wellness programmes, promoting awareness and education among staff, and connecting employees and their families with community resources and support services.
Ms. Williams emphasised the importance of education and early intervention in addressing the growing prevalence of dementia.
“Knowledge is one of our most powerful tools in the fight against dementia. By helping individuals recognise the signs and symptoms early, understand risk factors, and access available resources, we can improve outcomes for those living with dementia and provide meaningful support to their families. Workplaces also have an important role to play by creating environments that are understanding, accommodating, and supportive of employees who may be directly or indirectly affected by dementia. We are encouraged by the strong participation of public officers and their commitment to building more informed and compassionate communities,” said Ms. Williams.
The VIAA expressed appreciation to VIPSLI for its partnership in delivering this important educational initiative and commended the over 300 public officers who participated in the session. The Association remains committed to advancing public awareness, promoting brain health, and supporting persons affected by dementia throughout the Virgin Islands.
As Brain Health Awareness Month continues, the Virgin Islands Alzheimer’s Association encourages the public to learn more about maintaining brain health, recognising the signs of cognitive decline, and supporting those living with dementia.
