Suspended RVIPF Officer Charged With Firearm and Assault Offences

A suspended Royal Virgin Islands Police Force officer has been charged with firearm and assault offences following an investigation into a domestic-related incident reported in May.

Police said Javier Smith, 39, of Belle Vue, has been charged with Possession of a Firearm with Intent to Put Any Other Person in Fear and Common Assault.

According to the RVIPF, Smith was interdicted from duty earlier this year following a domestic-related incident reported on May 27. He was initially arrested for questioning and subsequently interdicted while the investigation continued.

Police said the investigation has now resulted in Smith being formally charged with the two offences.

Smith was granted $45,000 bail and is scheduled to appear before the Magistrate’s Court on October 1, 2026.

Acting Commissioner of Police Richard Ullger said allegations against members of the RVIPF are taken seriously and will be thoroughly investigated.

“Where evidence supports that an offence has been committed, appropriate action will be taken, regardless of the individual’s position within the Force,” Ullger said.

The RVIPF said it remains committed to maintaining public confidence and investigating allegations of criminal conduct involving its members “without fear or favour.”
