Premier the Honourable Dr Natalio Wheatley has reported significant strides in reshaping the educational landscape, emphasizing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education and bolstering the territory’s infrastructure. During his recent address on progress over the first 2 years of his government’s current term he noted that these efforts are aimed at preparing the next generation for the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly evolving world.
The transformation of classrooms into hubs of innovation began with the introduction of the Mathivated Project in September 2024, which empowered primary school teachers to teach mathematics with increased confidence and student-centered strategies.

A strategic staffing plan was finalized, adding over 80 new positions to schools across the territory, ensuring critical support for students and educators. This initiative was supported by a $2.5 million investment that funded vital upgrades such as roof repairs, electrical and plumbing improvements, the installation of backup generators, and the enhancement of security systems in schools.

Through the Let’s Teach VI initiative, professional development programs enabled educators to earn certifications in leadership and teaching through partnerships with H.Lavity Stoutt Community College and the University of the Virgin Islands. A new collaboration with Walden University also allows in-service teachers to earn Bachelor’s Degrees in Education without leaving the Territory, further improving the quality of education.
Key initiatives like the 10th-grade Coding and Robotics program and the Robo-Mindset Summer Camp which culminated in a community exhibition, were highlighed as efforts being made by the department of youth affairs and sports.
Jordan Dawson, a Virgin Islands scholarship recipient, was highlighted for demonstrating the power of local investment in education. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from HLSCC and earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences from Florida International University, Jordan will join Google’s Associate Product Manager program, becoming the first BVIslander to do so. His success highlights the opportunities available through the Territory’s growing educational initiatives. INSERT
