The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) and the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) recently celebrated the graduation of eight new Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs), marking a significant advancement in the territory’s healthcare system.
The 10-month AEMT programme accredited by the Caribbean Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) aims to strengthen emergency response services throughout the British Virgin Islands.
Among the graduates, special recognition was given to Sapphire Flax-Clarke of Virgin Gorda, who was named the Most Outstanding Student of the cohort. Her achievement highlights the dedication and hard work put forth by the students in mastering the essential skills required to provide life-saving care in emergency situations.
This is the third cohort to complete the AEMT programme, which is part of the Ministry of Health and Social Development’s broader initiative to expand and improve emergency medical services in the BVI. To further enhance healthcare professionals’ abilities, it was announced that the ministry will soon launch a Paramedic Programme, building on the skills acquired in the current programme.
The new graduates are set to play a vital role in delivering timely and effective emergency care, helping to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike.
