The British Virgin Islands’ National Health Insurance (NHI) programme is celebrating a decade of providing healthcare coverage to residents, with government leaders reflecting on its impact and outlining plans for the future.
Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley said when NHI was introduced ten years ago, it represented a bold and considerate vision aimed at improving access to healthcare for the people of the Virgin Islands. He noted that the programme has played a critical role in supporting residents and strengthening the territory’s health system.
“It has provided relief from illness, supported families through difficult moments and allowed many to enjoy a better quality of life. In doing so NHI has become a pillar of financial protection and a driver of wellness across the Virgin Islands,” said Premier Wheatley.
Looking ahead, the Premier expressed optimism about the future of NHI, saying the next ten years will be even better. He explained that the government is committed to making the programme more sustainable and more responsive to the evolving needs of the population, ensuring it continues to serve current and future generations effectively.
Minister of Health and Social Development, Vincent Wheatley, echoed those sentiments, emphasising that the ministry has carefully assessed what is needed to strengthen the programme. He said work is being carried out in clear and deliberate phases.
According to the Minister, these changes are designed to improve accountability and efficiency while maintaining high standards of care. He added that the reforms will help ensure that healthcare provided through NHI remains cost-effective and of the best possible quality for residents of the Virgin Islands.
