On July 19th, Minister of Health and Social Development, Hon. Carvin Malone delivered some daunting news of an airline passenger testing positive on arrival into St. Vincent and the Grenadines after travelling from the territory of the Virgin Islands on July 15th.
Through vigorous contact tracing, the government of the Virgin Islands have traced the passenger’s earlier location back to the island of Jost Van Dyke.
On July 21st, the government of the Virgin Islands announced that all residents and visitors on Jost Van Dyke are to remain at home under quarantine for the period of (7) days starting today.

Governor of the Virgin Islands, Mr. Augustus J.U. Jaspert in a statement addressed the people of the Virgin Islands relating to the new imposed lock-down on Jost Van Dyke.
Governor, Augustus J.U. Jaspert said “Cabinet has introduced this curfew as a precaution to protect public health, under the powers available to the Minister of Health.”
No widespread breakout in Jost Van Dyke
Governor Jaspert clarified in his statement that the Government does not believe that there is a widespread outbreak on the island of Jost Van Dyke but to their knowledge one person from the island tested positive, immediately after leaving the BVI.
He explained that the Health Services Authority have already conducted contract tracing and have isolated at-risk individuals.
He continued “But, it is only right that we do everything possible to minimize the risk of further transmission. We have seen regional isolation be effective in other parts of the world and believe this cautious approach is the best thing for BVI as public safety is our top priority.”
Food and Supplies to be provided for residents
This lockdown came as a surprise to the residents of Jost Van Dyke. Residents were caught off guard and were unable to properly prepare for such lockdown.
Governor Jaspert assured persons that residents living on Jost Dyke will not be left without food or supplies. The Government will be providing food and other essential supplies throughout the curfew.
