AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES TO BECOME STATUTORY BODY; “THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES WILL BE NO MORE, WE’LL ESTABLISH A STATUTORY BODY THAT WILL BE MORE RESPONSIVE TO THE NEEDS OF THE MARKET AND THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY.” DR. HON. NATALIO WHEATLEY

In a recent interview with our agency Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth affairs, Fishers and Agriculture Dr. Hon. Natalio Wheatley stated that his Ministry is moving to have Agriculture and Fishers be a statutory body.

In speaking on legislative changes that would take place in the near future, Wheatley said, “Our legislation needed to be modernized, and it also needed to be consolidated because there are several small pieces of legislation. This legislation is doing exciting things like establishing a statutory body. The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries will be no more, we’ll establish a statutory body that will be more responsive to the needs of the market and the needs of the community and it will do lots of exciting things like allow us to buy all the produce from the Fishers and Farmers and have it at a depot in Paraquita Bay like a farmer’s market that persons can come too and shop for all their organic produce locally grown produce.”

Since taking office the Fahie Administration has announced plans to make more Government Departments a statutory body with individual boards that Govern these entities such as the Trade Department.

What is a statutory body?

A Statutory body refers to organizations and bodies that are defined by a formal law or a statute. These bodies are entities shaped by an Act of Parliament and set up by the Government to consider the data and make judgments in some area of activity and are independent of Government. Non-statutory is essentially another term for common law.
