DR. ARLIENE PENN TO HIGHLIGHT 2021 NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORS’ DAY, TELLING HER STORY

Dr. Arliene T. Penn will be the highlight of this year’s National Cancer Survivors Day in the BVI on Tuesday June 8, sharing her cancer survivor story with other cancer survivors and those who are currently battling the disease.

This is according to a media release from the BVI Cancer Society, which said it will be hosting an event to observe the National Cancer Survivors Day with a theme entitled “A Celebration of Life.”

President of the BVI Cancer Society Gloria Fahie expressed confidence in Dr. Penn’s ability to deliver a dynamic view during her speech as guest speaker, since she has been a cancer survivor for some 17 years.

Fahie believes the message from Dr Penn – who is the Director of Communications in the Premier’s Office – is needed to inspire people about survivorship.

“When people think that you are diagnosed with cancer, they think that you have a death sentence, and really don’t believe that. I believe in fighting with all our might,” she stated.

“She must have done something right to be a survivor for such a long time and people who are going through it just need to hear the experiences of others. In this case, we are pleased that Dr. Penn has agreed to share her story which we believe will help to change the life of someone,” Fahie added.

Balloons to be released

Meanwhile, the president also revealed that at the event, balloons will be released to commemorate the memory of cancer victims and to celebrate those persons who are currently battling cancer.

“We hope to see people coming out to support our patients and survivors in this important health matter that continues to affect many families in the Virgin Islands,” President Fahie added.

The event is scheduled to be hosted at Irvine’s Place Upper Main Street across from VP’s Bank.

Persons are being encouraged to attend the event and support where possible.
