PUBLIC WORKS SAY THEY ARE INCREASING ROAD MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY WORKS, “ROAD ASPHALT PATCHING AND SOME BUSH CUTTING WILL BE MORE APPARENT AS WE CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE INCREASED RAIN SHOWERS HEADING INTO THE SEASON; ALONG WITH SPEED BUMP PLACEMENTS WHERE SAFETY IS OF CONCERN.”-JEREMEY HODGE. ARE THESE ROAD WORKS BEING COMPLETED EFFICIENTLY?

As residents traverse the territory of the Virgin Islands, it is evident that road works are being done such as bush cutting, speed bumps and asphalt patching among others. Most notably are the increased speed bumps around the territory and the partial fixing of Roads. What has become apparent is that while road works are being done, they are not being done efficiently and seamlessly completed. Many of the retaining wall projects are done without proper resurfacing of roads after completion, leaving motorist subjected to treacherous road conditions.

Acting Director of the Public Works Department, Mr. Jeremy Hodge has said that the Public Works Department (PWD) is engaged in heightened road maintenance activities in preparation for the hurricane season and to ensure continued public safety.

Mr. Hodge said the Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1, and will officially end on November 30. He said as the Territory works to develop its collective disaster readiness and security during this time of increased risk, the Public Works Department plans to ensure the soundness of the Territory’s infrastructure as best as possible.

“Prior to and as we officially enter the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, we continue to clear drains and ghuts throughout the Territory,” the Acting Director said, adding, “Road asphalt patching and some bush cutting will be more apparent as we continue to experience increased rain showers heading into the season; along with speed bump placements where safety is of concern.”

Speed Bumps

Mr. Hodge indicated that while most remedial road works are initiated by the Public Works Department, the placement of speed bumps are a collaborative effort, as they are only placed in communities throughout the Territory at the request of District Representatives on behalf of the community members in an effort to mitigate concerns for safety.

The public is asked to be mindful of the movement of heavy equipment along road ways from Virgin Gorda to Jost Van Dyke and be patient with workers as they carry out the necessary road works.
