BVIHSA SETS UP FIELD HOSPITAL

The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) seeks to continue to take a proactive approach in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  As the Territory begins to experience a dramatic rise in confirmed cases, the organization has activated its contingency plan by initiating the establishment of its field hospital.

This move is to ensure that the BVIHSA is equipped and ready to effectively respond, should a significant number of persons begin to exhibit COVID 19 symptoms and require hospitalization.

Ag. Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Cedorene Malone-Smith explained “the field hospital is to serve as an overflow to the current COVID wing at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital.” she further added that “this will be available for persons who require medical intervention, but do not necessarily have a need for acute medical care.”

The BVIHSA field hospital, which is temporarily housed at the Multipurpose Sports Complex will initially be equipped to accommodate 25 persons.  However, it has the ability to increase in bed capacity should the need arise. The field hospital will be manned by BVIHSA clinical care team; as well as members of the medical cohort from Cuba, who were invited to the Territory last year to provide COVID-19 response support.
