PIONEER OF BVI’S FINANCIAL SERVICES INDUSTRY DR. MATHAVIOUS TO BE CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER FOR HIS 45 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE TERRITORY

Pioneer of the BVI Financial Services Industry Dr. Robert Mathavious will be celebrated in the week of November 15th for his 45 years of service to the territory.

This announcement was made during a recent press conference held by the BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC).

During the press conference it was announced that his legacy will be celebrated over several days with events starting on November 15th through 18th.

The overall theme for the week is ‘The House That Mathavious Built’ and will begin with a special tribute to Dr. Mathavious by the BVI Public Service, led by Deputy Governor David Archer Jr. and Public Servants, to be followed by a ‘Meet the Regulator Forum’ at which time Dr. Mathavious will give an address to the industry, the following day.

The centre piece of the four days of celebration will be an international conference headlined by keynote speaker, Mr. Pascal Saint-Amans, Director of the OECD Centre for Tax Policy Administration located in Paris, France. He will address 150 persons at a gala dinner on the evening of 17th November, to be followed the next morning by a one-day conference titled ‘Global Currents’ with speakers hailing from Asia, Europe, USA and the Caribbean.

The Conference will not only cover the current financial milieu with topics such as the meaning of Global Britain, the current global regulatory environment and the state of play in our major markets, but will seek to chart a course for the future of international financial services in this pandemic period with all its challenges. The subject of Green Finance will also be an area to be covered as IFC’s look to build a more sustainable future.

These events will be sponsored by the BVI Financial Services Commission, the Government of the Virgin Islands, and the Financial Services Industry.

Dr. Mathavious has played a pivotal role in charting the course of the development of the BVI’s financial services industry for over 35 years. He has also had an illustrious 25-year career as a civil servant, during which he served as Deputy Financial Secretary (1980-1985), Financial Secretary (1985-1991) and Director of Financial Services (1993-2001).

In January 2002, Dr. Mathavious assumed the post of Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, a position he held until December 2020. He also often served as Deputy Governor and Acting Governor.
