TROPICAL STORM ROSE FORMS. VIRGIN ISLANDS MIGHT EXPERIENCE 1-3 INCHES RAINFALL THROUGH TUESDAY FROM TS PETER

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has upgraded Tropical Depression Seventeen to Tropical Storm Rose, the 17th named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season.

At 5 pm EDT, the centre of Tropical Storm Rose was located over the far eastern Atlantic Ocean abut 370 miles (595 km) west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands.

Rose is moving toward the north-northwest near 16 miles per hour (26 km/h). A motion toward the northwest is forecast to begin by tonight and continue through Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 40 miles per hour (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center.

Some strengthening is expected to occur through Monday. By Tuesday, environmental conditions are expected to become less conducive, and Rose is forecast to begin a slow weakening trend.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

The NHC says only during the 2005 and 2020 hurricane seasons has the 17th named storm occurred on an earlier date.

Meanwhile, the NHC says there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect for Tropical Storm Peter.

At 5 pm AST, the centre of Tropical Storm Peter was located over the Atlantic Ocean about 350 miles (560 km) east of the northern Leeward Islands.

Peter is moving toward the west-northwest near 17 miles per hour (28 km/h), and this general motion along with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected through Tuesday.

A turn to the northwest is expected to occur by Wednesday. On the forecast track, the centre of Peter is expected to pass well north of the Leeward Islands on Monday and Tuesday.

Little change in strength is forecast to occur tonight. Some slight weakening is expected on Monday.

Rainfall around the southern periphery of Tropical Storm Peter could produce rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, across portions of the Northern Leeward Islands, including the Virgin Islands, as well as Puerto Rico through Tuesday.

This rainfall may lead to areas of urban and small stream flooding.

Swells generated by Tropical Storm Peter are expected to reach the northern Leeward Islands tonight and Monday, and then the Bahamas by midweek. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
