2017 PRISON ESCAPEE RECAPTURED BY POLICE DURING OPERATION IN WEST END, TORTOLA

The male arrested in West End Tortola during a Tuesday morning police operation has been identified as prison escapee Jose Almestica, who escaped since 2017.

This was confirmed in a media release by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force moments ago, which said the 33-year-old was arrested and charged for escaping lawful custody.

“Jose Almestica escaped from Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut in 2017 during the passage of Hurricane Irma,” the RVIPF stated.

It added, “He was arrested in 2016 for illegal possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and illegal entry. He was on remand for these offenses prior to his escape.”

The Police said investigations are ongoing, therefore no further information can be released at this time.
