SELECT PUBLIC OFFICERS STILL REQUIRED TO WEAR MASK BY GOVERNMENT POLICY

In an official correspondence the Deputy Governor of the Virgin Islands Mr. David D Archer Jr. issued a statement following the announcement by Health Minister on Mask Mandates.

The statement by Deputy Governor David D Archer stated, “Following the statement (attached) ‘Adjusting Public Health Measures in the Current Context of COVID-19’ issued by Honourable Marlon A. Penn, Minister for Health and Social Development on 13th June, 2022, this circular brings to your attention the Cabinet Decision which speaks to the removal of the legal requirement to wear face masks/coverings in public places with effect from 15th June, 2022. It is important to note, however, that public and private organisations will still be allowed to set their own policies on face coverings.”

He continued, “Therefore, as the Deputy Governor, discussions regarding developing and instituting a mask policy for public officers and offices in the absence of a legal mandate have been conducted with Senior Leaders of the Public Service. For the next 3 – 6 months, considering the high interaction with the public, especially frontline support, receptionists and other officers who give direct and regular service to external clients, an extension of the mask policy will be implemented for the following public officers and offices:

1. BVI Post;

2. Department of Information and Public Relations;

3. Department of Labour and Workforce Development

4. Department of Motor Vehicles;

5. Department of Trade, Investment Promotions and Consumer Affairs;

6. Deputy Governor’s Office Apostille Unit;

7. Inland Revenue Department;

8. Land Registry;

9. Law Enforcement and Border Control Agencies, including but not limited to;

a. Her Majesty’s Customs;

b. Immigration Department;

10. Public Health and Healthcare Services, including but not limited to;

a. Environmental Health Division;

b. Public Health Unit

11. Schools and Educational Centres (Announcement to be made by the Ministry of

Education);

12. Social Care Services, including senior homes and other residential facilities; and

13. Survey Department

He further added, “Please note, the 3 – 6-month period is not limited to, nor does it solely affect the offices listed above. Officers outside of the named offices are also allowed to continue wearing masks if deemed necessary for their safety and peace of mind.

Your health and safety remain priority as we continue to remain flexible and adaptable as it relates to COVID-19 protocols. Please stay safe and use discretional knowledge when interacting with co-workers and members of the public as COVID-19 is still an active pandemic.”
