DECISION TO BE MADE ON WHETHER TO RENOVATE OR REBUILD THE ALTHEA SCATLIFFE SCHOOL

The Ministry of Education will be deciding on whether to renovate or demolish and rebuild the Althea Scatliffe Primary School after it was recently deemed structurally compromised and closed indefinitely.

This was confirmed by the Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley at a recent press conference.

A recent inspection of the school’s building revealed concerns relating to its structural integrity which prompted the Ministry of Education to quickly decide to indefinitely close the building to all activities.

Premier Wheatley, who is the former Minister of Education, said that due to the nature of the findings of the report, the school will either have to undergo significant renovations or will have to be completely rebuilt.

Late last year after a roof collapsed at the school, investigations revealed it was caused by a natural process called spalling, which mounted several pieces of concrete on the inner roof of the building, leading to its eventual breakdown.

Premier Wheatley spoke about the issue of spalling.

With the school now forced to undergo major construction work, Premier Wheatley said the Ministry of Education will now have to secure a temporary location for the students.
