EXPECT MORE HORSE RACING EVENTS THIS YEAR – SAYS BVI HORSE OWNERS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

On the heels of what he described as a greatly successful staging of horse racing activities on August 2nd, President of the BVI Horse Owners Association Lesmore Smith said residents can expect more similar events before the year is over.

According to Smith, during the planning stages for August Tuesday, organisers had already begun to plan for future events.

“There are events already planned for the rest of the year… including conversations had with St Thomas hoping that they too would be up and running events sometime in the early part of December”, Smith told 284News.

Smith said the calendar of events seeks to highlight observations during the year that were traditionally known to include horse racing as a form of entertainment and sport.

So far, he revealed that races are planned for Memorial Day, September 2nd, and Boxing day, December 26th.

Though the stage has been set, Smith said there is still a significant amount of work to be done to ensure that the events are a success.

“We just need to work all of the logistics back out in regards to transportation and getting the quarantine barns up and ready. So it’s a whole lot still left to be done, but it can be done…. We can come together as a team, as a country, and the Caribbean region. Come together and make things happen”, he said.

In addition to continuing to build on the relationship between horse owners in the British and US Virgin Islands, Smith said that his association is also building on relationships with counterparts in the wider region.

“I have invited Antigua here. In 2019, they were here and we had a great celebration. First time ever for a foreign country outside of the VI to be able to travel to the BVI to participate in competitive racing. We are hoping and extending the invitation to them for September”, he said.

Details surrounding the intended racing schedule for September will be released in the coming weeks.
