EFFORTS ONGOING TO ESTABLISH MEDICAL SCHOOL SAYS BVIHSA CHAIRMAN

Chairman of the BVI Health Services Authority Moleto Smith has shed some light on the progress of efforts to establish a medical school in the Territory.

Smith spoke at a recent press conference where he noted that “over the course of the past year tremendous strides have been made with Tiber Heath in collaboration with a number of other Ministries and entities of the Government in the BVI towards the establishment of a medical school through Ponce AU University Puerto Rico in the British Virgin Islands.”

According to Smith, at this current stage efforts are ongoing to complete the necessary space allocations for the establishment to be hosted by the BVIHSA.

“ The BVIHSA will serve as the host location. Toward that end, we are doing a lot of work around space allocation and lease discussions with them and we are currently awaiting the next steps but we are in constant and continuing discussions and interchange with that group,” he said.

Plans for the medical school were unveiled in the second quarter of 2021 by Former Premier Andrew Fahie.

At the time he noted that the establishment of such an educational institution would be a great accomplishment for the territory.

The school is expected to host as many as 200 students but will seek to draw a first cohort of about 50.
