Premier Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley has announced that he will be visiting the United Kingdom in the coming days to meet with the Minister for Overseas Territories the Right Honourable Lord Goldsmith.

Premier Wheatley said the scheduled meeting with Goldsmith is one of many meetings to be had on his trip as he intends to advocate for a number of items on behalf of the territory.

“In a week and a half, I will travel to the United Kingdom to advance the economic, political and environmental interests of the Virgin Islands. On the agenda are financial services, investment and environmental partnerships. I will also meet with our students and citizens in the United Kingdom to hear their concerns and ideas,” he said.

“The visit will also be my first official opportunity to meet Minister for the Overseas Territories Lord Goldsmith as well as engage the BVI All-Party Parliamentary Group and other UK parliamentarians who have an interest in the Virgin Islands,” he added.

Premier Wheatley was also asked by the media whether his trip to the UK will involve him lobbying to have the Order in Council removed from the territory.

In a brief response, he said, “Certainly. I will be meeting with the minister and I certainly will advocate for that Order in Council to be lifted.”
