6.5 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE FELT IN TERRITORY

It was a rocky morning in the Leeward Islands as a 6.5 magnitude earthquake rattled the area. Many residents reported feeling the shaking, including in the Virgin Islands.

The Department for Disaster Management confirmed the event and provided further details in a statement.

According to the DDM, the earthquake’s epicentre was located 65.75 kilometres South of Montserrat, at a depth of 166 kilometres. The shaking began at 7:23 am and lasted several seconds.

The DDM has further advised that despite this morning’s event there have been no warnings or watches issued for the Virgin Islands.

Other Islands who reported feeling the event include Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Martinique and Saint Lucia.
