THE COMMITTEE STAGE BEING MADE PUBLIC AND THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT A PRIORITY

Residents of the British Virgin Islands may soon become privy to the discussions held during the Committee Stage of the House of Assembly, a measure the Virgin Islands Party Government is willing to consider to improve transparency and good governance during their next four years in office.

Premier Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley confirmed his government’s willingness to have the Committee Stage televised to the public, similarly to how the House of Assembly proceedings is broadcasted.

Premier Wheatley, while expressing that his government is not perfect, said they will be doing their best not to repeat the previously made mistakes that occurred during their first term in office.

To assist with keeping the government fully transparent and accountable to the people, he said a number of measures will be taken including having the Freedom of Information legislation brought to the House of Assembly.

The premier also admitted that in some instances democracy and transparency were lacking during the previously served four years in office, but said going forward his government will be turning a new page.
