BOYNES TAEKWONDO ACADEMY TO HOST BVI’S FIRST POOMSAE COMPETITION

Boynes Taekwondo Academy is gearing up to host the territory’s first Poomsae competition which will be held at their Kingston, Tortola Dojang on January 20, 2024.

The Poomsae is a high-performance competition with defined patterns of defence and attack practised to refine Taekwondo techniques for colour belts yellow through red.

There will be three stages of competition, ranging from beginner’s (yellow and orange), intermediate (green, purple, blue), and advanced (brown and red).

“Each participant is required to perform two Poomsaes. The first is based on the contestant’s current belt, and then the other will be selected based on their level of knowledge. Each entrant will have the opportunity to restart one time only on their selected Poomsae,” the academy stated.

It added, “Medals will be distributed based on 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Judging will be based on our Kukkiwon guidelines (Governing body of taekwondo) for performing their Poomsaes.”

Owner of the Boynes Taekwondo Academy Sabumnim/Master Olanzo Boynes said the academy is proud to have developed the art of Taekwondo over the years in the territory to host the first Poomsae of the BVI.

“This is a competitive Olympic sport and the fact that we can now earn the recognition by the Caribbean Association that we are able to host our own Poomsae competition is significant for the progress of the sport and preparing athletes to compete in more events and qualifiers for Games,” Boynes stated.

He added, “We welcome any person that is actively practising Taekwondo outside our Dojang to contact us at (284) 542 2334 or via email boynestkdacademy@msn.com if they are interested.”
