HIGH COURT PUBLISHES 2024 JURY LIST FOR REVISION

The High Court of the Virgin Islands has published its annual jury list, kicking off the process of revising and finalizing the pool of eligible jurors for 2024.

In accordance with standard procedures, the Registrar and four court assessors will convene from March 18-20, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. at the court’s location on the 4th Floor of the Sakal Building to review and update the list as deemed appropriate.

“The Registrar may make changes to the list as he or she thinks fit, either by adding or striking out names, or otherwise,” the court announcement states.

Any individual, whether included or excluded from the initial list, maintains the right to appear personally or through legal representation to claim qualification or ineligibility to serve as a juror during the revision period.

Those unable to attend in person can submit written notice to the Registrar outlining their claim, supported by evidence as required, prompting an inquiry into their specific circumstances.

“The Registrar will then, as far as he or she reasonably can, inquire into the claim,” the court stated regarding the evaluation of submitted evidence.

Subject to the right of appeal under section 13 of the applicable law, the Registrar’s final decision on revising the jury list will be considered conclusive.

All persons remaining on the finalized list after the Registrar’s revisions will be qualified and obligated to serve as jurors throughout 2024 if summoned unless specifically exempted due to illness or unavoidable circumstances.

The annual jury list revision process ensures a qualified, updated pool of Virgin Islanders is available for potential jury duty, a critical component of the Territory’s judicial system and administration of justice.
