The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), in partnership with KPMG, has concluded the second round of public consultations as part of its mission to develop a forward-looking Strategic Plan for healthcare in the Territory.
This phase of the consultation process focused on the sister islands of Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke, where residents shared their insights, concerns, and expectations for a more responsive and equitable healthcare system.
While many attendees highlighted long-standing issues such as emergency response, specialist access, and infrastructure gaps, others expressed a growing sense of hope that the initiative signals a genuine effort to design a healthcare system that reflects the voice of the people.
The community meeting held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, on Jost Van Dyke, was especially well-attended. Residents turned out in significant numbers, with students from the JVD Primary School also participating. The students offered thoughtful questions and perspectives, underscoring the importance of involving youth in shaping the Territory’s healthcare future.
“It has been truly inspiring to hear directly from the people, their passion, their frustrations, and their ideas,” said Mrs. Cedorene Malone-Smith, Director of Hospital Services and BVIHSA’s liaison for the KPMG-led planning process. “What stood out particularly in Jost Van Dyke was the engagement of our young people. The students came prepared with important questions and clear expectations for their future healthcare system. Their voices remind us that this plan is not only about today’s system, but the kind of care we want for the next generation.”
KPMG, the consulting firm leading the development of the Strategic Plan, will continue to engage internal stakeholders across the BVIHSA system over the next few days. These sessions aim to further explore operational realities, opportunities for improvement, and pathways for innovation within BVIHSA’s healthcare infrastructure.
KPMG will conclude this week’s visit with a Key Stakeholder Summit tomorrow afternoon (Thursday, May 15), and stakeholder consultations with the Public Sector throughout the day on Friday. KPMG’s goal for the upcoming summit and consultations is to share preliminary insights, provide updates on the planning process, and facilitate dialogue on emerging priorities.
