The Roots to Resilience: Together We Thrive Programme say they are thrilled to announce the successful launch of its latest initiative, the Old-Time Talk Cultural Dialect and Slang Mingle. The Roots to Resilience: Together We Thrive Programme collaborated with the Social Development Department and presented the Old-Time Talk Cultural Dialect and Slang Mingle as a part of the celebra5ons for Seniors Month 2025. This unique event took place on Wednesday, 14th May, 2025 bringing together community members to celebrate and preserve the rich heritage of the Bri5sh Virgin Islands.
The Old-Time Talk Cultural Dialect and Slang Mingle is designed to foster a deeper understanding and apprecia5on of the local dialects of the seniors and youth slang, especially the Gen Alphas, that form an integral part of communica5on today. Participants engaged in lively discussions, with the youth assis5ng seniors and interactive activities.
“We believe that language is a powerful tool for connec5ng genera5ons and strengthening community bonds,” said Territorial At-Large Representa5ve, Hon. Lorna Smith. “The Old-Time Talk Mingle provides a platform for individuals of all ages to come together, share their stories, and celebrate the unique tapestry of our islands.”
The event featured a welcome by the Programme coordinator, Mrs. Brenda Lettsome-Tye, remarks by the Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon. Vincent Wheatley, and Hon. Lorna G. Smith, who although on duty travel, called in to the event. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about Virgin Islands Cultural Dialect sourced from “Bo Hog Put in Gold Teeth” and “The Virgin Islands Dictionary” by Mr. Kareem-Nelson Hull and slang used by the newest genera5on, Gen Alpha. Mr. Hull hosted two games that highlighted that although the words used may be different, the meanings are the same.
The entire event was sponsored and hosted by Nanny Cay who provided the venue, food, musical entertainment, and the prizes for the games which included dinner at Peg Legs and a 2-night stay at Nanny Cay Hotel. “We wish to thank Mr. Miles Sutherland and the entire team at Peg Legs who not only served but ac5vely partcipated in the event by wearing various cultural wear and contributed to the fes5vity of the celebra5ons,” Mrs. Lettsome-Tye stated.
She added that it was a pleasure to work with the team at Nanny Cay who were committed to providing an excellent experience for the Seniors.
