The British Virgin Islands Athletics Association (BVIAA) is proudly celebrating a historic milestone as it announces the participation of Team BVI at the upcoming World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13–21.
In a statement on Tuesday, the BVIAA said for the first time since the territory made its debut at the championships in 1983, six BVI athletes have qualified to compete, making this the largest delegation ever to represent the Virgin Islands on the world athletics stage.
The qualified athletes span both track and field events and include a mix of seasoned contenders and rising stars. Leading the charge is Kyron McMaster, 2023 silver medalist in the 400m hurdles, who returns to compete in his signature event. Joining him are returning sprint and field athletes Rikkoi Brathwaite (100m), Beyoncé Defreitas (200m), and Chantel Malone (long jump), a former semi-finalist.
The team also welcomes two exciting first-time qualifiers: Jaleel Croal, set to compete in the 200m, and Djimon Gumbs, who will take on the shot put.
