Wheatley urges action on Alzheimer’s

Health and Social Development Minister Vincent Wheatley has called on the community to raise awareness and take action during World Alzheimer’s Month. As the Virgin Islands joins the global observance of World Alzheimer’s Month this September, Minister for Health and Social Development Vincent Wheatley has shared a message of support and renewed commitment to the ongoing work around dementia awareness and care.

In a recent video message, Minister Wheatley emphasized the importance of open dialogue on dementia-related issues, noting that speaking up leads to stronger, more effective policies that can support those affected and their families.

However, he says many causes are not reported as people assume dementia is linked to aging which isn’t always true.

He encouraged residents to take part in the month’s activities, including the upcoming Walk Against Dementia scheduled for Friday, September 19, at 4:45 p.m. at Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park. The walk aims to honour those living with dementia and show solidarity with caregivers and advocates.

Minister Wheatley also invited the public to engage more actively by joining groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association, which continues to play a vital role in education, support, and advocacy.
