Caribbean Cellular Telephone (CCT) has officially switched on the Territory’s first 5G network, marking a milestone that ushers the British Virgin Islands into a new digital era. With faster speeds, lower latency, and greater reliability, 5G is set to transform how residents live, work, and connect.
“The BVI deserves world-class technology, and today we’re proud to deliver it. 5G puts us on par with the most advanced markets in the world and opens the door to opportunities our community can embrace immediately,” said Averad Penn, CEO of CCT.
CCT’s decision to roll out 5G in the BVI reflects years of planning and investment. While some have questioned whether a market of this size can support next-generation technology, CCT continues to forge ahead—because the people of the BVI deserve nothing less.
“This launch is the result of years of dedication from our team and partners,” Penn continued. “We didn’t wait for concessions or incentives. We invested because our customers matter, and we’re committed to delivering them the very best.”
The company also called on policymakers and regulators to continue supporting the sector, noting that access to additional spectrum, consistent regulation, and investment-friendly policies will be critical to realizing the full potential of 5G.
Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley recognized this milestone and commended CCT’s commitments to serving the BVI. “I congratulate CCT BVI on this monumental achievement. The introduction of 5G technology affirms CCT’s commitment to investing in a quality customer experience, raising the bar for the provision of services in the local telecommunications industry. I am hopeful that this move inspires greater investments in the excellence that the Virgin Islands deserve,” he said.
CCT’s 5G network already has limited availability across much of the BVI, with coverage expanding in the months ahead. The company has also upgraded its entire 4G LTE network, currently supporting the majority of customers, to support the transition to 5G.
For everyday customers, 5G means smoother streaming, crystal-clear video calls, lightning-fast downloads, and the ability to connect more devices without slowdown. Device compatibility is key, and CCT is working closely with major manufacturers to ensure that 5G-enabled handsets connect seamlessly to its network.
“This is about positioning the BVI for the future. We’re proud to lead the way, and we’re excited to see how our customers and community take advantage of what 5G makes possible,” Penn concluded.
