Virgin Islands Search and Rescue responds to six incidents in February

The Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) responded to six incidents across the territory during February, according to the organisation’s latest monthly roundup.

VISAR reported that volunteers handled one search for a missing person and five injury-related responses during the month. Incidents occurred in several locations including Jost Van Dyke, Buck Island, Cooper Island and The Baths on Virgin Gorda.

In addition to the field responses, volunteer coordinators also handled 29 calls through the organisation’s emergency number, 767.

VISAR also highlighted training and professional development efforts undertaken during the month. At the beginning of February, members attended the Regional Caribbean Search and Rescue Workshop in Miami, hosted by the UK Maritime Coastguard Agency. The workshop included sessions facilitated by the International Maritime Rescue Federation and a dedicated Women in Search and Rescue workshop.

The organisation also reported that two volunteers recently completed TRiM Assessor training delivered by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. The training strengthens the capacity of VISAR’s TEAR team, which supports the wellbeing of its volunteers.

VISAR said the report reflects the ongoing commitment of its volunteer team to its mission of saving lives at sea, noting that the work is made possible through continued community support.
