September is being observed as World Alzheimer’s Month.
The Virgin Islands Alzheimer’s Association VIAA is encouraging the community to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and to recognise the importance of knowing the early warning signs.
VIAA says this year’s theme, “The Earlier You Know, the More You Can Do,” underscores the importance of recognising changes early, seeking information and support, and taking steps that can help individuals and families navigate a diagnosis.
Throughout September, VIAA will host a number of activities and initiatives to observe World Alzheimer’s Month, raise awareness, provide education, and encourage community dialogue around Alzheimer’s and dementia.
President of the VIAA Edna Williams said September gives them an important opportunity to bring the conversation about Alzheimer’s and dementia to an even wider audience.
According to Williams, the message behind this year’s theme, ‘The Earlier You Know, the More You Can Do,’ is powerful because knowledge gives families an opportunity to make informed decisions, seek support, and plan for the future.
She is encouraging everyone to join us throughout the month and become
part of this important conversation.”
VIAA also encourages individuals, families, community organisations, and service clubs to participate in Alzheimer’s awareness and education initiatives.
It said by increasing knowledge of the early warning signs and promoting conversations about brain health, the organisation hopes to help more families recognize concerns sooner and connect with appropriate resources.
