NO JUSTIFIABLE REASONS FOR CURFEW ORDER

In a recent Facebook post, former Education Minister Myron Walwyn shared his thoughts on the Curfew Order.

There are fundamental rights and freedoms accorded to each individual in the Virgin Islands and these are provided for in the Human Rights Chapter of our constitution.

It is incumbent upon our decision makers to provide justifiable reasons when interfering with those rights.

An “old order” was replaced by a “new order.” Though the provisions are the same in both, they are two different orders. The covid 19 situation is fluid in nature and as such the circumstances on the ground will change from time to time which hopefully should operate on the minds of our decision makers when implementing these orders.

There are no known covid 19 cases at the present moment. Our borders are substantially closed. The population, for the most part, is adhering to the social distancing rules and protocols.

There may very well be justifiable reasons for the imposition of a “new order” but those reasons must be given.

I do not think that the issue is soo much that our movement has yet again been restricted. The greater issue is the fact that no justifiable reasons or no reasons for that matter have been advanced to justify the action taken.
