ONE YEAR IN: KICKIN IT UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY IMPACT IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS

Kickin It University (KIU) is proudly celebrating its first anniversary this month (May), after a successful year of preserving and promoting Virgin Islands culture. Since launching, KIU has hosted over a dozen classes, reaching over 250 registered students – over 100 of whom actively participated throughout its inaugural year.

“I am incredibly proud of how far Kickin It University has come,” says Kyra James, Founder of KIU. “This milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team and to celebrate, we’re hosting a special plait pole class. Plait poles, also known as maypoles, were historically used to welcome the warm months and mark festive times, making it the perfect way to end our semester! We look forward to seeing the program grow, and making an even greater impact in the community.”

KIU has delivered a diverse range of classes that highlight local traditions and creative skills. The program’s flexible approach includes a mix of virtual, in-person, and theory-only formats, making cultural education more accessible than ever. Some of the courses offered included:

  • Tart Techniques
  • Heritage Dancin’
  • The Art of Music Production
  • Moodboard Masterclass
  • Johnny Cake Making
  • National Heroes
  • Conch Shell Chorus
  • Virgin Islands Fungi
  • Bamboula Steps and Rhythms
  • Bush Remedies

Students have expressed their enthusiasm for the program, with many highlighting the enriching and engaging learning experience.

“I just wanted to take a moment to say how incredible KIU is! One night, I found myself with nothing to do, and I remembered this program. From the moment I started exploring, I was completely drawn in. Learning about my culture and history in such an engaging way was not only eye-opening but also deeply meaningful. KIU is more than just a platform, in my opinion, it’s a powerful reminder of where we come from and a bridge connecting us to something truly extraordinary. The impact it has is invaluable, and I can only imagine how many more lives it will touch as it grows!” Kaeli Alphonso, KIU Student

“My KIU tart making experience was wholesome. I enjoyed the class, the community of Virgin Islanders and the true essence of what KIU is really about, keeping our culture alive. A heartfelt thank you for bringing a piece of home to Atlanta. I will be back!” – Kyra Smith, Tart Techniques Student

“I recently led the Mood Board Masterclass at KIU and it was easily one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done this year. I enjoyed working alongside the Kickin It team to inspire fellow creatives, showing them that no dream is too big! I can’t wait until the next one!'” – Travis Walters (also known as Travie Rozae), Moodboard Masterclass Instructor

“Mrs Butcher was so graceful and patient in how she taught us the different traditional steps. She even choreographed a new dance for us at KIU using a few of the steps we learned! All in all, I loved the class so much.” – Kailah Thomas, Heritage Dancin’ Student

KIU will host its final class of the school year on May 24 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in collaboration with the Cyril Romney Tortola Pier Park. The class will focus on the art of plaiting poles, a traditional cultural skill. This event is free and open to the public.

The entire Virgin Islands community is encouraged to continue to support KIU’s mission by taking advantage of the free to low cost courses, volunteering their time as instructors or making a donation. To learn more about how to get involved, please visit kickinituniversity.com.
