Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton has confirmed that retired sprinter Usain Bolt returned a positive test for the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Tufton made the announcement at a virtual press conference at Jamaica House Monday evening, telling journalists that Bolt “has been formally notified” of the positive result.

Reports of Bolt’s positive test emerged Monday morning. However, in response, the Olympic legend stated in a video release that while he had taken a coronavirus test over the weekend, he was still awaiting confirmation of the results from the Ministry of Health.

In the meantime, noting that social media has been avidly discussing Bolt’s positive test and reports of “an activity relating to Usain Bolt”, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said: “These matters are all being thoroughly investigated and the police will give a report on these matters in the near future”.

The prime minister later said no preferential treatment will be given to anyone.
Bolt reportedly celebrated his 34th birthday with a party in Kingston last week.
