Three United States (US) senators have introduced a War Powers Resolution aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from taking military action against Cuba without congressional approval.
Senators Tim Kaine, Adam Schiff, and Ruben Gallego said the measure would require any US involvement in hostilities against Cuba to be authorised by Congress. The resolution, which could be voted on after 10 days, calls for the removal of US armed forces from any military action against the island that has not been approved by lawmakers.
The senators accused Trump of escalating tensions by imposing a military blockade and threatening possible military action against Cuba. They argued that under the US Constitution, only Congress has the authority to declare war.
Trump recently said his administration would turn its attention to Cuba after the conflict with Iran, suggesting the island could face a “friendly” or “unfriendly” takeover. Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Díaz‑Canel confirmed that officials from both countries have recently held talks aimed at resolving their differences.
