The British Virgin Islands men’s senior football team suffered a 1-3 defeat to Saint Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday, October 9, in the 350th CONCACAF Nations League game.
The match, held at Warner Park, marked a continuation of Saint Kitts’ unbeaten run in Group C of the competition.
Saint Kitts opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Malique Roberts headed in a well-placed free kick, putting the home side ahead. Gvaune Amory doubled the lead in the 37th minute, finding the back of the net with a right-footed shot inside the penalty area, after a perfectly timed pass from Raheem Hanley.
The BVI showed signs of life early in the second half when Kristian Javier scored a right-footed strike from the top of the box, reducing the deficit to 2-1 just a minute into the half. However, hopes for a comeback were dashed in the 5th minute of stoppage time, as an unfortunate own goal by Ikyjah Williams sealed the 3-1 win for Saint Kitts and Nevis.
With the victory, Saint Kitts and Nevis secured their qualification for the Play-In Round of the CONCACAF Nations League, while the British Virgin Islands remain winless at the bottom of the standings with zero points from three matches.
The BVI will look to turn their fortunes around and earn their first victory of the tournament when they face the Cayman Islands on Saturday, October 12, at 3:30 p.m.
