LIAT (2020) Limited has moved to clear its name following widespread misinformation that surfaced after the recent indictment of Dr. Allen Onyema, CEO of Nigeria-based Air Peace Limited.
The company emphasized that its ownership and operations remain unaffected by the legal troubles of Onyema, a key stakeholder in the aviation industry.
In a statement released on Tuesday, LIAT (2020) Limited addressed the concerns sparked by Onyema’s indictment by U.S. authorities for obstruction of justice. The charges stem from an alleged scheme to submit false documents during an investigation into previous accusations of bank fraud and money laundering. The airline’s Chief of Administration and Finance, Ejiroghene Eghagha, has also been implicated in the obstruction case.
LIAT (2020) swiftly clarified that these legal issues have no bearing on its operations. “We believe it is important to provide clear and accurate information to our valued customers, partners, and stakeholders,” the company stated, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and regional connectivity.
The company further explained that LIAT (2020) is incorporated under the laws of Antigua and Barbuda, as a joint venture between the government of Antigua and Barbuda (GOAB) and Air Peace Caribbean Limited (APCL). The shareholding structure comprises 30% for GOAB and 70% for APCL.
Importantly, LIAT (2020) stressed that APCL is an entirely separate entity from Air Peace Nigeria Ltd. “Mr. Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace Nigeria Ltd, holds no shares, directorship, nor is he involved in APCL or LIAT (2020) Ltd,” the statement clarified.
The company reassured stakeholders that Onyema’s legal battles are unrelated to LIAT (2020)’s business, emphasizing that the airline’s commitment to regional air services remains strong. “As we continue our mission to provide reliable flight services throughout the region, we are grateful for the ongoing support of our customers, stakeholders, and partners,” LIAT (2020) concluded.
Air Peace Limited also responded to the indictment on its official platform, reiterating that both Onyema and Eghagha maintain their innocence and that the charges are part of an ongoing legal process dating back several years. The Nigerian airline assured customers that its operations will continue without disruption.
LIAT (2020)’s response aims to dispel confusion, underscoring its independence from the legal troubles surrounding Air Peace Nigeria and its leadership.
