The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is currently under a Flash Flood Advisory, with minor flooding expected in low-lying and flood-prone areas. The advisory, which is valid until 8:30 PM tonight, was issued by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services due to ongoing weather conditions.
A line of moisture influencing the weather over the islands has been causing periodic showers, with up to an inch of rainfall already recorded in some areas over the past three hours. An additional inch or more of rainfall is likely over the next eight hours, which is expected to lead to minor flooding in vulnerable areas, particularly along roads and streets.
The advisory warns that while flooding is not expected to be immediately life-threatening, conditions may still cause inconvenience. Streams, creeks, and drains may become elevated or overflow into streets, and property damage is expected to be minimal. However, authorities caution that even just one foot of flowing water can sweep vehicles off the road.
Residents and drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution when encountering flooded roads. The Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) advises that if you are in doubt about the safety of driving, make the smart choice and turn around. Moving to higher ground is also recommended.
Authorities continue to monitor the weather conditions, which are expected to persist through the evening.
