The first tropical storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Arthur, formed Wednesday near the Gulf Coast, prompting warnings of heavy rainfall, flash flooding and dangerous weather conditions across parts of Texas and Louisiana.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Arthur was located about 40 miles east-northeast of Port O’Connor, Texas, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and moving northeast at 9 mph. Forecasters said the storm is expected to weaken after moving inland and could dissipate by late Wednesday or early Thursday.
The greatest threat remains life-threatening flash flooding, with rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches expected across parts of the Gulf Coast and isolated areas receiving up to 20 inches. Flooding risks extend into Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and the Florida Panhandle through Friday.
Experts also warned of possible tornadoes, coastal flooding from storm surge, and dangerous surf and rip current conditions along the northwestern Gulf Coast over the coming days.
