BVI SAILOR JOINS GLOBAL FLOTILLA TO DELIVER AID TO GAZA

British Virgin Islands national Dane Hunter has joined the Global Samud Flotilla, an international mission seeking to break the blockade of Gaza and deliver urgently needed humanitarian aid.

Hunter, who has Palestinian friends in the Caribbean and New York, said his decision to join was deeply personal.

“It’s a man-made tragedy. You have starving kids. Honestly, I don’t know how anybody wouldn’t take this opportunity if it were given to them,” he explained.

The flotilla, years in the making through coalitions such as the Freedom Flotilla and the March on Gaza, has drawn hundreds of participants and thousands of supporters worldwide. Ships are carrying food, medicine, and baby formula, with the aim of providing immediate relief and opening a maritime corridor into Gaza’s territorial waters.

Hunter noted that while the mission faces serious risks including rough Mediterranean seas and possible interception by Israeli forces participants have undergone extensive non-violence and safety training. Two vessels have already survived drone strikes, he said, but crews managed to contain fires and continue sailing.

The flotilla’s organizers stress that their aid is purely humanitarian and screened by third parties. Distribution will be handled by established networks on the ground to ensure supplies reach starving families, especially children.

Beyond the immediate delivery of aid, Hunter hopes the voyage will rally global solidarity.

“Our governments have let us down internationally. That means we as people need to stop them. International solidarity is recognizing your humanity and the humanity of the Palestinian people. No child should be starved to death,” he said.

He also urged individuals around the world to show support through awareness, protest, and conscious consumer choices.

“Money talks. Choosing not to fund corporations complicit in this genocide is one way to cast your vote.”

Despite dangers ahead, Hunter said he feels compelled to continue

“I don’t think I have a choice in the matter. I have a skill set [they] say are useful. I have to go.”
