MINISTER OF EDUCATION FORMS SPECIAL COMMITTEES TO ASSIST WITH THE WAY FORWARD THIS SCHOOL YEAR

The Minister of Education and Culture, Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley revealed that a special committee has been formed to assist schools and students in some instances. Hon. Wheatley spoke to this during a live forum which focused on the reopening of schools.

In accordance with the Education Act, 2004, the Minister has the power to appoint special committee.

One special committee that has been formed is the Veteran Educators Task Force (VET). This committee will provide support to the school system in various way.

The group consist of veteran educators that are retired but have volunteered to assist the school system in the Territory. The Minister mentioned educators such as Irma Vanterpool, Carol O’Neal, Lorna Dawson, Cecilly Malone, Quincy and Curlyn Lettsome and many others.

The Education Minister also revealed that an Education Advisory Counsel will be formed this year. This group will serve as an advisory committee to the Minister.

This Committee will comprise of representatives from the business community, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, University of West Indies open campus, Teachers’ Union, Education Officers, Parent Teacher Associations and a representatives for principals.

The Minister explained that this allows for a collaboration across many different stakeholder groups within education.

He further explained that this will provide a way for a more scientific and strategic method of making decisions and will give him access to different viewpoints from different sectors.
