HEALTH MINSTER CARVIN MALONE RESPONSIBLE FOR PRISONS ISSUES STATEMENT ON RECENT HM PRISON ALTERCATION; TURNED DEADLY

A violent altercation occurred among several persons incarcerated at Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, 30th May which resulted in the injury of four inmates. Three of the four inmates sustained serious stab wounds and were taken to the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Mr. Nichail Chambers subsequently died in hospital as a result of severe injuries sustained during the incident.

I have been informed by the Acting Superintendent of Prisons, Mr. Royston Percival, that all prisoners have been confined to their cells while the matter is being investigated by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, and one inmate has been formally charged in relation to this matter.

On behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands, I offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and pray that the injured inmates will make a full recovery.
