LJD VI BLOCK ORDERS ALL STAFF TO BE VACCINATED BY JULY 10TH OR NOT RETURN TO WORK

In a letter sent to our newsroom, LJD VI Block located in Baugher’s Bay Tortola, one of the BVI’s premier building supply company’s has ordered all unvaccinated staff to be vaccinated with their first dose by July 10th, 2021 or not return to work.

The letter dated July 6th, 2021 states, “Due to the current status with positive Covid-19 cases in the BVI, it has left me in a position to think about the safety of staff and customers. With this being stated I would like all LJD VI Block staff to be vaccinated. Ministry of Health has extended 1st dose vaccinations until Friday July 9th, 2021 at the Catholic Church next to Nagico from 9:30am-3:30pm.”

The letter concluded by informing staff that persons who do not comply should not return to work.

“Person who fail to be vaccinated by Saturday July 10th, 2021 are advised NOT to report to work. This is a precautionary method that needs to be taken to prevent further spread of this virus within our facility.”

Our newsroom reached out to LJD VI Block and they confirmed the authenticity of the letter and that all unvaccinated staff received a letter.

LJD VI Block has a staff of some 30 employees, the company did not confirm how many of the 30 employees have already been vaccinated.

To date, the Government of the Virgin Islands is yet to confirm or make a statement on an employer’s ability to mandate employees to be vaccinated.

When questioned on the matter after reports of many businesses particularly in the hospitality industry mandating employees be vaccinated or not come to work. Premier and leader of Government business Hon. Andrew A Fahie stated that he had no comment as it is a matter for the Labor Department.
