PANAM SPORTS INTERESTED IN BUILDING A COMPETITION-SIZE SWIMMING POOL IN THE BVI

The Pan American Sports Organisation (PANAM) has expressed interest in building a competition-size swimming pool in the British Virgin Islands.

This is according to the President of the BVI Olympic Committee Mr. Ephraim Penn, who made the disclosure at a recent press conference.

He said the message was relayed by the international sporting organisation at a recently held meeting.

With no competition-size swimming pools in the territory, Penn said that it has created severe frustration among the BVI Swim Federation.

Just last year, the Recreation Trust announced plans to complete a partially built swimming pool in Virgin Gorda by 2023.

At the press conference, the Minister for Sports Honourable Sharie De Castro was asked for an update on the proposed plans by the Recreation Trust.

She said she had a scheduled meeting with Trust and would provide a further update on the plans for the pool at a subsequent date.

This is not the first time that the territory has been promised a competition-size swimming pool.

Premier Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley who was the Minister for Sports in August 2021, said that two functional competition-size swimming pools were in the works for the territory after the government identified locations on Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

Premier Wheatley said an agreement was made on the two locations following several discussions with key stakeholders which include donors to the projects.

He further said that the project was a priority with plans of helping the territory to field more Olympic swimmers in the next Olympic Games.
