SPECIAL HOLIDAY ANNOUNCED IN OBSERVANCE OF QUEEN’S ELIZABETH’S II FUNERAL

Governor of the Virgin Islands his Excellency John Rankin CMG in an official declaration stated that “whereas it is provided by section 5 of the Public Holidays Act (Cap.199) that it shall be lawful for the Governor with the advice of the cabinet to issue a proclamation appointing a special day to be reserved as a public holiday throughout the Virgin Islands.”

Further, “The cabinet has advised that Monday the 19th day of September, 2022 be reserved as a public holiday throughout the Virgin Islands.”

This is in observation of the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Premier Wheatley will be traveling to the United Kingdom to attend the funeral on behalf of the territory.

According to an official statement from Buckingham Palace, the State Funeral for Queen Elizabeth II will be held at Westminster Abbey on September 19th.

The Queen’s remains currently lie in the throne room in Edinburgh, after travelling from the Balmoral Castle on Sunday, where she died a few days prior.

For a period of four days, before the state funeral, the Queen’s coffin will lie at the Westminster Hall to allow members of the public to come pay their final respects.

After the funeral, the Queen will be laid to rest in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, inside the St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

There she joins King George VI, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and her sister Princess Margaret.
