27TH EDITION OF HLSCC COLLEGE CLASSIC RACE SERIES KICKS OFF IN VIRGIN GORDA

The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), with Mourant as its main sponsor, will host its 27th edition of the HLSCC College Classic Series from 17th September through 12th November with three races on Virgin Gorda and four races on Tortola.

The first race of the series in Virgin Gorda will take place on Saturday, 17th September with registration at the HLSCC Virgin Gorda Centre in The Valley. The first race of the series in Tortola will be held on Saturday, 24th September at the HLSCC Main Campus in Paraquita Bay.

Registration will be from 6:30 a.m., followed by a 7:00 a.m. race start on all race days. Both races will provide an opportunity to also promote Alzheimer’s and Dementia Awareness as the College partners with the Virgin Islands Alzheimer’s Association. Persons are strongly encouraged to pre-order their Alzheimer’s t-shirt through the Alzheimer’s Association and wear it in support during the race days. Purple is the colour in support of this cause.

Race Director, Mrs. Stephanie Russ Penn has expressed that she is looking forward especially to the regrowth of the series as it returns to a more typical format.

Mrs. Russ Penn said, “I am encouraging everyone to get ready to come out and be a part of this wonderful community activity designed for all ages and abilities. I also would like to remind persons that the series is a green event, which means it is disposable water bottle free.”

Participants are therefore encouraged to bring their own water bottles to be refilled by the series’ main water sponsor, Blu Water.

This year, the races will consist of a three-race series on both Virgin Gorda and Tortola with series winners decided from the best out of two races.

The Virgin Gorda Series will consist of two-mile races for individuals, while the series on Tortola will cater to Under-11 individual participants running the 1 mile and ages eleven and up individuals running 2 miles.

The Paraquita Bay cross-country section will cater to teams from Service Clubs and Community Partners only. Consideration for the return of primary and secondary divisions will be made in 2023.

On Tortola, the series will culminate with the 3rd edition of the Elite Exchange, a 3-person relay race with each person running 2 miles. This relay has become an exciting and welcomed addition to the College Classic races.
