DEPUTY PREMIER SMITH PROMISES TO ADDRESS LABOUR ISSUES – PLANS ALREADY IN PLACE

Deputy Premier and Minister for Labour and Trade Hon. Lorna Smith OBE has promised residents that the long wait times for work permit approvals will become a thing of the past under her leadership.

Smith made the comment in response to a question posed by the media at a press conference on Tuesday where she said that the use of technology will assist with resolving this long-existing labour issue.

She revealed that she has already met with the Labour Commissioner to ensure that the wait time which in some cases lasts up to nine months, is reduced significantly.

The minister also spoke on the staffing issues within the Department of Labour and Workforce Development which she said also extends to the sister islands.

Meanwhile, Premier Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley issued his full support to Smith in ensuring the labour woes become a thing of the past in the BVI.
