In a recent press conference, Premier Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley addressed the impacts of Tropical Storm Phlippe on the British Virgin Islands . The Premier acknowledged that the rainfall was much more than initially forecasted and put significant pressure on the region’s infrastructure and resources. He highlighted the increasing frequency of such extreme weather events due to climate change and emphasized the need for greater resilience and adaptation.
The Premer noted that despite preparatory measures taken from May to August, including cleaning all ghuts and major drains, some watercourses were overwhelmed. However, he noted, most of the infrastructure held up, with only a few areas requiring immediate attention.
The full report on the impact of the storm and the scope and cost of damages is being completed. The Premier said that the government looks forward to receiving this report to identify necessary repair works and improve infrastructure effectiveness in coping with heavy rain.
