GOVERNMENT SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION BILL

The government is calling on residents to review and provide feedback on the proposed Human Rights Commission Bill, 2024 currently open for public consultation.

The Bill outlines provisions to establish the VI Human Rights Commission, detailing its powers, functions, and composition. As drafted, the Commission would consist of five commissioners with equal gender representation, including at least one commissioner residing in the Sister Islands.

Key responsibilities proposed for the Commission include receiving and investigating human rights violation complaints, promoting public awareness and education around human rights principles, and issuing statements on human rights matters affecting the territory.

The draft Human Rights Commission Bill can be accessed and comments submitted online at bvi.gov.vg/humanrights. Residents can also email questions to the Deputy Governor’s Office at dgo@gov.vg.
