Diamante Gumbs secured his second consecutive gold medal in the men’s discus event at the 2024 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships on Saturday, outshining his twin brother Djimon Gumbs who settled for the silver medal.

Representing Northwestern State University (NSU) with distinction, Diamante’s impressive victory came from his first attempt, launching the discus to a remarkable distance of 56.26 meters, marking his best throw among all six attempts.

In contrast, Djimon fought hard, requiring five attempts to secure the second-place position with a commendable distance of 54.51 meters.

The Gumbs brothers’ dominance was further demonstrated on Friday, with Djimon claiming his third consecutive gold medal in the shot put event, extending his winning streak at the SLC championships dating back to 2022.

While Djimon excelled in the shot put and discus events, he also made a notable appearance in the javelin, securing a commendable fourth-place finish despite not participating in the event throughout the year.

The outstanding performances of the Gumbs brothers contributed significantly to NSU’s success at the championships, helping the university secure its second consecutive second-place finish in the men’s division, falling six points short of the University of the Incarnate Word Athletics.
